Description
Spinifex sericeus is a perennial dioecious grass known for its stout, stoloniferous growth. It typically grows between 0.3 and 0.6 meters tall, with branched stolons that can stretch several meters. The leaves are flat, linear, and covered in silky hairs, and the ligule is a dense rim of hairs. The plant produces distinct male and female inflorescences, with the female inflorescence detaching at maturity and acting as a tumbleweed. It plays a vital ecological role by stabilizing coastal sand dunes, preventing erosion, and serving as a pioneer species in disturbed areas. Indigenous peoples also use it for weaving bags and baskets, highlighting its cultural significance.
